Who the Extended Pathway Is For
The Extended algebra pathway is designed for MYP Year 5 students who are working towards IB Diploma Mathematics (Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation at Higher or Standard Level). It demands stronger abstract reasoning and the ability to generalise patterns algebraically.
What the Extended Pathway Includes
Extended Unit 2 Algebra moves beyond expression manipulation into the world of sequences and patterns. Topics include:
- Conversion and Sequences — moving between recursive and explicit forms
- Arithmetic and Geometric Sequences — nth term rules, sum formulas, contextual comparison
- Sequential Design — using sequence models to analyse and describe design patterns
- Hexagonal Numbers — algebraic generalisation of figurate number patterns
- Garden Pattern — real-world pattern generalisation using algebra
The Role of Criterion B in Extended Algebra
A significant portion of Extended Unit 2 is assessed through Criterion B (Investigating Patterns). Students are expected to: notice a pattern, express it algebraically, test their general rule, and justify it. This is a structured process — not guesswork — and requires both mathematical rigour and clear written communication.
Compared to Standard
While Standard students focus on manipulation and function notation, Extended students also need to model, generalise, and justify. Both pathways require algebraic accuracy, but Extended tasks reward students who can move fluidly between numerical, algebraic, and contextual representations.
