Standard Level Number in MYP Year 5

The Standard level strand of Unit 1 Number focuses on building confident, accurate numerical and algebraic reasoning. It is designed for students who are developing their mathematical skills at the expected pace for MYP Year 5 and do not plan to pursue DP Mathematics at Higher Level.

What Standard Level Covers

Students work through six core topic areas across this unit:

Who Standard Level Suits

Standard level is the right choice for most Year 5 students. It provides thorough preparation for the MYP eAssessment and lays solid groundwork for DP Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level, as well as Analysis and Approaches at Standard Level.

How Topics Are Examined

Standard level topics are assessed through both on-screen examinations and portfolio tasks. Criterion A questions often involve multi-step problems combining exponents and sequences. Real-world proportion problems frequently appear in Criteria C and D contexts.

Frequently asked questions

Standard Unit 1 covers inequalities and non-linear inequalities, rational and irrational numbers, laws of exponents, proportions, two sets of number sequences, and equivalence with rational functions. Extended pushes the same ideas further: tougher exponent manipulation, deeper irrational number work, more abstract sequence generalisations, and rational functions with greater symbolic complexity. Standard masters the core toolkit; Extended layers on harder unfamiliar problems.
Standard Number suits students aiming for IB DP Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI) at SL, or those who find Maths manageable but not their strongest subject. Fits learners comfortable with Year 4 number work, fractions, basic indices, and straightforward equations. If you regularly score 4–5 in MYP Maths and want secure 5–6 outcomes, Standard fits. Students targeting AA HL or competitive STEM should choose Extended.
Standard questions are scaffolded: parts (a), (b), (c) guide step-by-step, numbers stay friendly, contexts are familiar. Exponent laws appear with integer powers more often than fractional ones. Extended strips away scaffolding, combines multiple concepts in one problem, uses messier algebraic expressions, and demands stronger justification. In Standard, full marks reward careful execution; in Extended, also spotting non-obvious strategies.
