What the 70% Sectional Covers

The 70% sectional test extends your AP Biology readiness assessment through Unit 6: Gene Expression and Regulation. At this stage, you are integrating molecular mechanisms of inheritance, regulatory systems, and biotechnology tools alongside the cellular biology, energetics, and genetics content tested in earlier sectionals. This is the most molecularly intensive sectional checkpoint.

Units Included in the 70% Sectional

Units 1–5: Foundation Through Heredity

All content from the 50% sectional — molecular biology, cell structure, energetics, signalling, cell division, and genetics — continues to feature in AP-style questions at the 70% level. Integration across these units becomes increasingly important as the test builds toward full-exam complexity.

Unit 6: Gene Expression and Regulation

DNA replication, transcription, RNA processing, translation, post-translational modifications, prokaryotic gene regulation (operon model), eukaryotic gene regulation (transcription factors, epigenetics, RNA interference), mutation effects, and biotechnology techniques. Unit 6 connects directly to Unit 5 (heredity) and Unit 4 (signalling and cell cycle regulation).

Preparing for Full Mocks After the 70% Sectional

Strong performance on the 70% sectional indicates you are ready to attempt full AP Biology-style mock exams. Weaknesses identified here — particularly in operon regulation, mutation analysis, or biotechnology applications — should be addressed with targeted unit review before sitting a full mock under timed conditions.

Frequently asked questions

The 70% sectional covers Units 1 through 7, adding gene expression, regulation, and evolution to the earlier content. It is the most comprehensive sectional and tests your ability to connect molecular mechanisms to evolutionary outcomes — a core AP Biology theme.
The 70% sectional covers most of the curriculum but excludes ecology from Unit 8. Strong performance indicates readiness for full mocks once ecology is completed. If evolution or gene regulation questions are still weak, focused review of those concepts will help before starting full-length practice.
Identify which biological concepts or reasoning skills still cause errors. If Hardy-Weinberg calculations are weak, practice the math. If gene regulation explanations lack depth, practice writing detailed molecular-level answers. Complete your ecology study and begin full mocks with confidence in your biological reasoning.
