About Full Mock 4

Full Mock 4 emphasizes two topic areas that are frequently underestimated by AP Statistics students: experimental design (Unit 3) and regression analysis (Units 2 and 9). These areas carry significant weight in the AP Statistics FRQ section and reward students who can write detailed, precise methodological explanations.

Study Design Focus

Experimental Design FRQs

Mock 4 includes at least one full FRQ dedicated to experimental design, requiring students to describe how they would conduct a well-designed experiment for a given research question. Strong responses specify how randomization is carried out, how treatments are assigned, what is being controlled, and what the experimental units are — all in sufficient detail for the described experiment to be replicated. Vague references to 'random assignment' without operational detail do not earn full marks.

Sampling and Bias Questions

Several MCQ and FRQ items test the ability to identify sampling methods, explain how they work, and evaluate the potential for bias. Students are also asked to distinguish between random selection (for generalization) and random assignment (for causation) — a conceptual distinction the AP exam tests repeatedly.

Regression and Regression Inference Focus

Units 2 and 9 Integration

Mock 4 connects descriptive regression from Unit 2 with inferential regression from Unit 9. Questions ask students to interpret slope in context, use residual plots to assess model appropriateness, and then extend to testing whether the true population slope is significantly different from zero. This connection across units reflects the actual AP exam structure, where a single FRQ may require both regression description and regression inference.

Frequently asked questions

During Mock 4, write every FRQ response as if it will be scored by the AP reader. Include all four inference steps when applicable, name the procedure, check every condition, and conclude in context. After Mock 4, compare your responses to scoring guidelines and note exactly which components earn points.
A strong inference FRQ names the procedure, states hypotheses using proper notation, checks all conditions with justification, computes the test statistic and p-value (or confidence interval), and states a conclusion in the context of the problem. Missing any of these components costs points. Mock 4 is a good time to practice hitting every component.
Check each FRQ against the scoring rubric and ask: Did I state conclusions in context? Did I check all required conditions? Did I use correct statistical terminology? Did I interpret the p-value or confidence interval correctly? These communication elements are where most AP Statistics FRQ points are earned or lost.
